Rock My World
The Personal Stories Behind the Stones
About the Show
Rock My World - The Personal Stories Behind the Stones explored the relationship between rocks and the people who collect them. Rather than focusing only on unusual specimens or finished lapidary work, the show asked club members to share the stories behind stones that held particular meaning for them.
At the centre of the show were two large display cases assembled as a club-wide project. Members contributed a favourite rock, mineral or lapidary piece from their own collections together with a short account explaining why it was important to them. Each contribution was then connected by a line to its place of origin on a map, visually linking personal stories in Port Moody with collecting localities throughout the world.
The result was both a geological display and a portrait of the club itself. Individual specimens became starting points for stories about travel, collecting, friendship, family, discovery and the experiences that turn an ordinary stone into something personally significant.
The central Rock My World exhibit was a member-wide collaborative display. Each contribution combined a specimen, its personal story and its geographical origin, emphasizing that the value of a collection can lie as much in memory and experience as in the stone itself.
Featured Exhibits & Guests
- The Personal Stories Behind the Stones. Club members were invited to select something from their collections that held special meaning to them and explain the story behind it. Contributions ranged across rocks, minerals and lapidary work, creating a collective portrait of the interests and experiences of the membership.
- Connecting stories to place. Two central display cases contained the members' specimens and written stories. Lines extended from the individual contributions to locations plotted on world maps, showing where each stone originated and connecting the personal history of the collector with the geological history of the material.
