What happens at a lapidary workshop?
Members use specialized equipment to turn rough stone into polished pieces for jewellery, display and personal enjoyment. Typical activities include trimming slabs, shaping cabochons, grinding, sanding and polishing. Take some time to read through the resources below compliments of the International Gem Society:
- Part 1 - Introduction
- Part 2 - Making Smaller Pieces
- Part 3 - Tumbling
- Part 4 - Cabochon Cutting
- Part 5 - Faceting
New members receive instruction before using equipment and work under the direction of workshop supervisors. You do not need to arrive with a toolbox full of equipment — the whole idea of a shared workshop is to make the hobby approachable. There is a workshop fee of $5.00 per session. $50.00 punchcards are available for purchase.
