About the Show
The 35th annual Rock and Gem Show and Sale, From Then to Now - 35 Years of Having Fun with Rocks, took place October 26 and 27, 2013 at Kyle Centre in Port Moody.
This retrospective show recognized both the club's 35 years in Port Moody and the City of Port Moody's centennial. The club opened its archives and revisited the people and events that had shaped its history, combining those discoveries with new centennial-themed exhibits.
Elements of the retrospective were carried forward after the show. In 2014, the club created a condensed version of the historical display for the BCLS show in Abbotsford, again recognizing longtime members, their work and the contributions they had made to the club.
Featured Exhibits & Guests
- Artist Cosimo Geracitano and the Jade Book of Hope. Cosimo, a Coquitlam resident, returned for the retrospective, displaying the Jade Book and a collection of his tools.
- David Driscoll and the basswood. Former Port Moody mayor David Driscoll had officially opened the club's annual show during the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1988 the club gave him a block of basswood as a token of appreciation. For the 2013 retrospective he carved that wood into a sculpture titled Hands.
- The Centennial Stone. This 100-facet gemstone was cut by club member Geoff Cameron. It was displayed beside a timeline of key club events and was later gifted to the City of Port Moody.
- Port Moodite. The central display featured rocks collected in Port Moody, many cut into cabochons and set into jewellery. The Port Moody Station Museum contributed rock-related curiosities, including a cannonball found off Ioco Road in the 1930s.
- Erica Williams. The club invited Erica Williams, who had discovered fossils in the Port Moody area in the 1970s, to display her finds and interact with guests.
- Special presentations. Honourary membership was bestowed on three additional individuals, while existing honourary members were recognized with certificates and showcase dedications.
- Colonel Richard Moody. Because the show was officially recognized by the City as a Centennial Event, Port Moody's namesake was represented by David Spence as Colonel Richard Moody. Club members joined him in period dress circa 1913.
- The retrospective travels. A condensed version of the club-history display was carried forward to the BCLS show in Abbotsford in 2014. It preserved stories and examples of work associated with longtime members including Neil Schnee, Cecil Smith, Verne Trigg and Elaine Thompson, extending the historical theme beyond the original Port Moody show.
