About the Show
The 2017 annual show marked two important milestones: the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation and the 50th anniversary of the club. To celebrate, the Port Moody Rock and Gem Club created 150 Rocks, an ambitious collection telling the story of Canada through 150 rocks, minerals, fossils and other geological materials.
The collection was arranged as a journey through Canada. Part I, History in Stone, explored the country's geological past and some of its oldest and youngest rocks. Part II, Mineral Wealth, highlighted the minerals and resources that have played an important role in Canada's development. Part III, For the Rockhound, celebrated the colourful and collectible materials that make Canada's geology so fascinating.
Specimens were gathered with help from collectors, museums, educators, geological organizations and contributors from across Canada and beyond. The project was supported by the Canadian Geological Foundation and was accompanied by an illustrated brochure created to make the collection accessible to families, students and educators.
Following its debut at the 2017 show, the 150 Rocks collection travelled to other geological, educational and lapidary events, extending the project well beyond its original weekend at Kyle Centre.
